Ek Balam Ruins and Valladolid (from Cancun)

One of the most historically rewarding day trips departing from Cancun, this 10-hour journey into the Yucatan Peninsula combines ancient Maya ruins, a cenote swim and an afternoon in the colonial city of Valladolid — all in one well-paced Monday excursion. It is the kind of tour that reminds you how much of Mexico lies just beyond the hotel zone.

The centerpiece is Ek Balam, an 11th-century Maya ceremonial city that only began to be excavated and restored in the 1990s. Far less crowded than Chichen Itza and far more impressive than many visitors expect, Ek Balam’s main pyramid — the Acropolis — can still be climbed for panoramic views over the surrounding jungle. At its summit entrance, an extraordinary frieze of stucco carvings depicts jaguars, serpents and winged figures with a level of preservation that has genuinely surprised archaeologists. This is one of the finest examples of Classic Maya sculpture still accessible to visitors anywhere in Mexico.

A cenote swim follows the ruins — cool, clear water and a welcome contrast to the open jungle heat of the morning. The afternoon moves to Valladolid, one of the Yucatan’s most graceful colonial cities. Your bilingual guide covers the Cathedral of San Servacio and the Convent of San Bernardino Siena, a 16th-century Franciscan structure among the most beautiful in the region, before free time to wander the streets and sample local food.

This tour departs every Monday at 07:00 AM from selected hotels in Cancun. Staying in Playa del Carmen or Tulum? We also run the Ek Balam Ruins and Valladolid tour from the Riviera Maya.
